Duplicate folders

This feature requires Duplicate Cleaner Pro.

Duplicate folders are grouped together after a scan, and are a useful tool for quickly organising and marking your duplicate files for removal. To find them, tick Find duplicate folders in the Advanced folder search options before scanning.

File marks made in the Duplicate files list are reflected here, and vice versa - marking a folder here marks its files in the Duplicate files list.

Note: The folder groups shown are only duplicates according to your scan criteria and filters. For instance, if you only scanned for .jpg files, and had two folders with the same .jpg files in, they would be shown here - even though there may also be different files in those folders (for example .txt) outside of the scan criteria. This is useful if you want to find duplicate folders while ignoring some files (for example .bak or Thumbs.db files).

The duplicate folders are arranged into groups, showing the top duplicate folders which match in each group. You can expand a folder to view the folder tree beneath it. The groups are shown 25 to a page - use the arrows at the top to move between pages. A folder shown greyed and in italics is contained within a larger folder that is duplicated elsewhere.

Click the checkbox next to a folder to mark the folder and all its subfolders (or press Space to mark the selected folders). To only mark the folder itself without its subfolders, untick Automatically mark subfolders on checkbox click above the list.

The checkbox shows the marks on the folder’s files:

  • Empty - None of the files in the folder (or its subfolders) are marked.
  • Cross - All of the files are marked.
  • Partly filled - Some of the files are marked.

The pane on the right shows Information about selected folder: its path, size, the folder group it belongs to, and the files inside it.

Files that are in the duplicate files list have checkboxes that work just like those in the list. Files shown greyed and in italics are not duplicates (for example they were outside the scope of the scan) and can’t be marked here. Marked files are shown struck through.

The Filters drop-down above the list filters the folder groups:

  • Folder groups - None, Group has mark, Group has no marks, Group has some but not all marked or Group has all marked.
  • Groups - Only show groups whose total size is within a range.

Clear filters removes all the filters.

  • Expand all - Expand the folder’s whole tree.
  • Jump to containing group - For a folder that is part of a larger duplicate folder, go to the group of the larger folder.
  • Show filtered in Duplicate files tab [Folder] - Switch to the Duplicate files tab, filtered to the files in this folder.
  • Show filtered in Duplicate files tab [Folder group] - Switch to the Duplicate files tab, filtered to the files in this folder group.
  • Mark all selected / Unmark all selected
  • Protect folder tree / Unprotect folder tree - Protect the folder’s files from being marked or removed.
  • Copy to clipboard > Folder name (F6)
  • Show folder in File Explorer (Ctrl+Enter)
  • Refresh folders
  • Properties
  • Selection Assistant - A simplified Selection Assistant for marking folders, with All but one folder in each group and Only one folder in each group.
  • Find in list - Search the folder list (Ctrl+F, F3 for find next).
  • Export - Export the duplicate folders list to a CSV file. Tick Only export rows matching the current filters to export just what is shown.

Once folders are marked, go to the Duplicate files tab to remove the marked files with the file removal panels.
