Location marking

Location marking marks files according to where their duplicates are. It is ideal for jobs such as “remove everything on my backup drive that I already have on my main drive”.

You can use location marking from the Selection Assistant, or from the Mark and Unmark submenus of the files list context menu, which use the folder of the file you right-clicked.

Marking all files outside a folder (or folder tree) that have a duplicate inside that folder

Section titled “Marking all files outside a folder (or folder tree) that have a duplicate inside that folder”

This marks all the files outside the chosen folder or tree which are duplicates of the files in that folder.

If the preserve option is ticked, then any files in the chosen folder or tree are unmarked.

Example:

Chosen folder = C:\MyFiles\

Group 1
C:\MyFiles\file1.txt
D:\Backup\file1.txt
D:\Backup\copies\file1-copy.txt
Group 2
C:\MyFiles\Doc.txt
C:\MyFiles\Doc (2).txt
D:\Backup\Doc.txt
D:\Backup\copies\Doc.txt

After this operation the files in the Backup folder are marked:

Group 1
C:\MyFiles\file1.txt
D:\Backup\file1.txt MARKED
D:\Backup\copies\file1-copy.txt MARKED
Group 2
C:\MyFiles\Doc.txt
C:\MyFiles\Doc (2).txt
D:\Backup\Doc.txt MARKED
D:\Backup\copies\Doc.txt MARKED

Marking the files inside a folder (or folder tree) that have duplicates elsewhere

Section titled “Marking the files inside a folder (or folder tree) that have duplicates elsewhere”

This marks all the files inside the chosen folder or tree which have duplicates outside it.

If the preserve option is ticked, then the duplicates outside the chosen folder or tree are unmarked.

Example:

Chosen folder = C:\MyFiles\, with the same files as above. After this operation the files in the MyFiles (chosen) folder are marked:

Group 1
C:\MyFiles\file1.txt MARKED
D:\Backup\file1.txt
D:\Backup\copies\file1-copy.txt
Group 2
C:\MyFiles\Doc.txt MARKED
C:\MyFiles\Doc (2).txt MARKED
D:\Backup\Doc.txt
D:\Backup\copies\Doc.txt

Note: In the second example both Doc.txt and Doc (2).txt in MyFiles are marked, because both have duplicates outside the folder. This is what you want when clearing out a folder whose contents are safely kept elsewhere - but check the results before removing anything.
