Start scan

The Start scan tab displays an overview of the scan criteria and search locations you have chosen, along with feedback on the scan in progress.

At the top is the scan’s mode and name. To rename the scan, click the pencil button next to the name, type the new name and press Enter.

Below that, the settings you have chosen are summarised under Scan criteria, Search filters and Scan location. Click Edit beside any of them to go back to the What to find or Where to look tab and change them. Any problem with the locations - such as no folders chosen, or a folder that is missing - is shown here too.

The Start scan button begins the scan using the settings shown above it.

Before scanning, Duplicate Cleaner checks your settings and will tell you about anything that would stop the scan working - for example no folders to search, no duplicate criteria chosen in Attributes Only mode, or a file name mask that isn’t valid.

While a scan runs you can carry on working in other scans, or start more scans. A progress bar under the scan’s name in the navigation bar shows that it is busy.

Two settings on the General settings page affect scanning:

  • Prevent computer from sleeping during scan - Stops the computer going to sleep while a scan is running. Note this may not prevent sleep in cases such as low battery or closing a laptop’s lid.
  • Go to the results tab when finished - Shows the Duplicate files tab automatically when the scan completes.

The Cancel button stops the current scan. Depending on your scan there may be a short delay in cancelling if the program is in the middle of processing a large file.

Not yet available. Pausing a scan is not available in this version.

The time taken is shown next to the buttons. On the left, each stage of the scan is listed as it happens. When the scan is complete a summary is shown: the number of duplicate groups found, the number of files that have duplicates and their total size, and any remaining (unique) files.

On the right, two charts break down the files in the scan:

  • File types by size - Which kinds of files take up the most space.
  • Drives by usage - How full each drive in the scan is.

Click Copy data under a chart to copy its figures to the clipboard, ready to paste into a spreadsheet.

The Tools drop-down has one option:

  • Generate files list - Instead of finding duplicates, simply list every file found in the scan locations (after the search filters are applied). The list appears on the All found files tab, which takes the place of the Remaining files tab. This is useful for getting a complete inventory of a folder or drive, which you can then sort, filter and export.
