Image preview

The Image preview window is a handy way to view and compare the images in a group. It can be used alongside the main window containing the duplicate files.

Open it with the Image preview button on the left of the Duplicate files tab, or from the right-click menu. If Use internal viewers on double click is ticked in General settings, double-clicking an image also opens it here.

The two buttons at the top left switch between showing one image, and two images side by side for comparing.

The main area shows the selected image - click a file in the Duplicate files list, or a thumbnail in the window, to change it. In side-by-side view, click one of the two images to select it; the next file you choose is shown in that side.

Above each image are its file name and folder, size, dimensions and format.

Each image has these buttons:

  • Fit image - Scale the image to fit the window. Otherwise it is shown at actual pixel size, and you can scroll around it.
  • Show metadata - Show a panel of the image’s metadata (tags). The tags shown vary depending on the source and history of the image, and may have been created by the camera or image processing software. In side-by-side view, fields whose values differ between the two images are highlighted.
  • Show histogram - Show the image’s colour histogram. In side-by-side view, the “Histogram match” percentage shows how closely the two images’ colours match.

Correct orientation - Rotate images to display the right way up, according to the orientation in their metadata.

The current group is shown at the top, with arrows to move to the previous and next group. Groups outside the current filter are skipped.

Thumbnails of the files in the current group are shown down the side. The file size, dimensions and format are shown with each one. Hover the mouse pointer over a thumbnail to see the full file name and path, and click it to show it as the main image.

You can mark or unmark an image by clicking its checkbox. If Marked image overlay is ticked in General settings, marked images are overlaid with a marker so they are easy to spot.

Right-click a thumbnail for:

  • Open - Open the file in its usual application.
  • Unmark all - Unmark all the files in this group.
  • Invert marked files - Swap the marks of the files in this group.
  • Show folder in File Explorer
  • Properties

Untick Show thumbnails to hide the thumbnails and give more room to the images.
